by margaret on September 11, 2009

projects_widow04WHEN PHOTOGRAPHER ERICA BERGER was assigned a cover project about 9/11 by People magazine, she was reminded of what her mother asked her years ago when she worked at a newspaper: “Why do they always give you the religion and dying stories?” But Erica gathered herself, her photo crew, and 31 unacquainted women whom the events of the day had left without fathers for their unborn babies. See the slideshow of these inadvertent sisters, and read Erica’s recollections.
