I LOVE THIS SONG BY RICHARD THOMPSON, called “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” after the bike model, and every time I hear it, I think of my red-haired sister, Marion. WHO CROSSED YOUR PATH FIRST on New Year’s Day? If it was a redhead, you may need to fasten your seat belt for a bumpy 2010, since at least one beginning-of-the-year tradition holds that the person first crossing your threshold in the new year decides the luck you’ll have for the next 365 days. "Chelsy & Melissa," by Baum
REDHEADS NOTE ONE ANOTHER on the street. We check each other’s freckle distribution and eye color. We are always on the lookout for another of our breed. Maybe it’s because we’ve heard so many sentences that begin, “Typical redhead, you’re so….” Artists have always noticed us, too, and one we adore is photographer Julia Baum, who, for nearly two years, has been working on a portrait series called “A Rare Breed,” consisting entirely of natural redheads (like herself). Our TSP Galleries show of Baum’s work is here.
