I LOVE THIS SONG BY RICHARD THOMPSON, called “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” after the bike model, and every time I hear it, I think of my red-haired sister, Marion. I don’t even know if she knows the song (or Richard Thompson, or his ex-wife, Linda Thompson, or their son, Teddy Thompson, glorious musicians all). Do you, Marion? But as Richard’s cult hit says…Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme(Get all the lyrics…)

REDHEADS NOTE ONE ANOTHER on the street. We check each other’s freckle distribution and eye color. We are always on the lookout for another of our breed. Maybe it’s because we’ve heard so many sentences that begin, “Typical redhead, you’re so….” Artists have always noticed us, too, and one we adore is photographer Julia Baum, who, for nearly two years, has been working on a portrait series called “A Rare Breed,” consisting entirely of natural redheads (like herself). Our TSP Galleries show of Baum’s work is here.

A late Soviet postcard honoring the March 8th holiday

TO MARK THIS CENTURY-OLD celebration of women, rooted in the early demonstrations in textile and garment factories and now a global celebration, each TSP sister is naming names of women she admires. For Marion, it’s all about historical hair–specifically those red roots. Paige is paying tribute to some serious sorcery, while Anastasia reflects on her eclectic inspirations. Please come add your honorees.
