How’s That Reading List, Sis?

by margaret on August 25, 2010

By Anastasia Smith
FROM TIME TO TIME I love posting on here about sister-themed books (um, no I’m not talking about Sweet Valley High) that I’ve come across and enjoyed, because it always starts a juicy dialogue about what everyone has been reading lately. My current recommendation?

THE HILARIOUS PHOTO BLOG Unhappy Hipsters posts photos from trendy design magazines along with little satirical captions. Why I especially love its captions about siblings.

The Strawberry Days

by margaret on June 18, 2010

By Anastasia Smith
STRAWBERRY SEASON MIGHT be waning south of the Mason-Dixon, but since I know it’s still going strong up north, I thought I’d share my new favorite strawberry-centric recipe that I’ve been perfecting during the recent months. (And I say “perfecting” because I’ve made it and then ate all of it more times than I would like to admit.) Best with strawberries picked with a friend, of course. The juicy details.

LATELY I’VE BEEN LOVING The Seventeen Magazine Project, a social experiment and blog from 18-year-old high school senior, Jamie Kelles. The project guidelines require that Jamie live strictly according to the gospel of Seventeen Magazine for 30 days (from May 21 to the day of her high school graduation, June 21), in order to investigate further “the role of beauty/fashion magazines in society.” Her findings? Well, nearly to the end of this mad sociologist experiment, Jamie has blogged witty insight on all kinds of teen fem issues. Here are some of the highlights.

OY, I’VE GOT IT bad. As I round the quarter-century bend in my life, some primordial alarm clock within me is screaming. (Anyone else?) Here are the details of my current “issue.”

EW, WHY DOES Sex and the City keep betraying their awesome roots by making horrible movies that involve living happily ever after whilst traveling to foreign lands? (Did you see the first movie? Will you see this one?) Despite its annoyingly shameless focus on consumerism, I used to love watching the show. In the early seasons especially, the writing was fresh and funny–the female friendships, complex and compelling. But with this new movie coming out, I’ve been inspired to do some critical thinking (and reading) on the show’s ever-controversial relationship to feminism. Here goes–and I’d love if you’d weigh in with your own thoughts after reading mine.

LET ME TELL YOU: watching the MTV “reality” show The City is one of my favorite guilty pleasures ever. As you may know, this week marked the new season premiere. (Did you watch?) And so while I lay in bed soaking up all the new season gossip and Kelly Cutrone quips, I noticed a painfully handsome man sitting around at People’s Revolution. And then he spoke! And MTV told me that he was a designer for a brand called Nicholas K! And thus I put my stalker skills to work. Get the story.

Marina Abramović Made Her Cry

by margaret on April 30, 2010

ALMOST 1,000 MILES AWAY from Marina Abramović’s current performance piece at MoMA, our baby sister Anastasia has been deeply moved by the photos of visitors to her exhibition, The Artist Is Present. In this piece, Abramović waits at a table all day and people are invited to sit across from her and stare into her eyes. Learn more about this work from Anastasia.

BIG SISTERS HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHEN LITTLE ONES disappear sometimes. Especially when it’s for things like grad school, we have to be patient. Our baby sister, Anastasia of the Claiming Sisterhood blog, had fallen victim to a pile of papers lately, but she just crawled out from under…hallelujah! Come say “welcome home,” won’t you?

Me, Mom and Our Pistachio Bond

by margaret on January 14, 2010

tweetSO ABOUT A MONTH ago, when our sister Anastasia had first gotten home for semester break, she tweeted about a very sisterly moment between her mother and herself, in which they gorged themselves on pistachios and talked about Alec Baldwin’s undying handsomeness. Lo and behold, it led to free pistachios and other joys. Get the story.

More Braided Sisterhood

by margaret on January 9, 2010

3814747951_871440be79SPEAKING OF BEAUTIFUL braids, have you seen (or participated in) the Flickr pool Braid Wednesday? It features the beautiful braids of hundreds of Flickr users–kind of like a mini braid sisterhood! Our Sister Anastasia is a regular lurker; here’s why.

The Connection in Our Braids

by margaret on January 5, 2010

3448542398_9fe4c716f5-1WHAT IS IT ABOUT BRAIDS and sisterhood that makes them such divine companions? The fantastic how-to book Beautiful Braids was a longtime staple in TSP Sister Anastasia’s childhood, but somehow she never really mastered the tricky task of braiding her own hair in the mirror. (When she’s home sometimes her mom still does it!) Maybe the secret of sisters with fabulous braids is that they do it for each other? After getting a tip on the braid-heavy photo above from Pam at Retro Renovation, Anastasia started thinking about her favorite plaited ladies from The Sister Project. Here’s what she found:
