IT’S BEEN FAR TOO LONG since I dug up any vintage advertisement gems here on the blog. So on the heels of the big wedding (you know, the one where we all allowed ourselves to become nostalgic saps about fairy tale endings for a day), I thought this Ivory commercial would do just fine. Of note: is the princess receiving a large taxidermed giraffe along with her silks and diamonds? Also, I love her hairdo at 0:35.

I AM LUCKY ENOUGH to have become good friends here at graduate school with a bonified Jane Austen nerd. (Hello, former English majors!) When I am a mess over school or weepy about love sagas, this friend of mine always listens to my gripes and then pauses thoughtfully, before saying something to the effect of: “It sounds like you need some more Jane in your life.” (Yes, this is her proposed remedy for everything.) IHAVE SOME VAGUE MEMORIES of watching Steel Magnolias with my childhood best friend and neighbor, Amanda. We were too young to understand what was happening between all the glamorous big hair and delicious southern accents but we were enamored just the same. We both cried at the end. I’m not sure that we even understood why. I just remember feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness, that (thankfully) was quite novel to me then. I‘M DIGGING this photo post about girlfriends over at the blog size too small. It’s so sweet! This holiday season, I’m on the road, traveling in Japan with my boyfriend. We’re having a fantastic time, full of sticky rice balls and silly awkward bowing exchanges with strangers, but today, I’m feeling especially pangy for the Christmas-y comfort of my hometown girlfriends. Le sigh.

SPEAKING OF BEAUTIFUL braids, have you seen (or participated in) the flickr pool Braid Wednesday? It features the beautiful braids of hundreds of flickr users–kind of like a mini braid sisterhood! And some of my favorite style bloggers like Kate, Alyson, and Jenny (to name a few) have been inspired to get braiding. I’m still trying to master a French braid in my own hair (I currently have pathetic hand-eye coordination), but when I finally do, you readers will be the first to know.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT BRAIDS and sisterhood that makes them such divine companions? The fantastic how-to book Beautiful Braids was a longtime staple in my childhood, but somehow I never really mastered the tricky task of braiding my own hair in the mirror. (When I’m home sometimes my mom still does it!) Maybe the secret of sisters with fabulous braids is that they do it for each other?
