I REMEMBER READING, some years ago, that most children are afraid of Santa. And it makes sense: a big stranger with a beard (beards used to scare the wits out of me as a child) coming into your home while you sleep. If you’re still not convinced, behold an article in The Chicago Tribune boasting 46 photos of terrified children screaming on Santa’s lap. My favorite (aside from the one posted here) is number 9.

Scared O’ Santa photo of two miserable sisters forced to live through a holiday standard by parents reminds me of the solidarity sisters (and brothers, of course) can feel in meeting the differences between them and their parents. Such solidarity may be rough on parents but perhaps can foster an evolving nourishing intimacy between siblings which is refreshing to the more common rivalry.
