VINTAGE RECIPES HAVE long been a fascination of ours on The Sister Project. (see my commentary on my grandmother’s treasured tripe dish, for example.) The recipe box, after all, is one of the ways women have stayed connected across generational boundaries. So of course, I was delighted to read about a vintage cuilinary adventure that writer Wency Leung recently embarked on–an adventure far more interesting than just reading through your grandmother’s old recipes. Ladies: meet your, er, dream man
LIKE SO MANY WOMEN today, I often find myself wondering: “How can I make the most of my womanhood?” and “How will I find my Prince Charming?” and sometimes even, “What should my life goals be?” Luckily we can all find answers to these vexing questions (and so much more, really) every Monday night on The Bachelor. And I’m only half-kidding. [click to continue…]

TOMORROW MARKS THE 38th ANNIVERSARY of the supreme court’s Roe v. Wade decision. I’m so grateful to have been born into a country where sisters (and brothers, too, of course) before me fought for women’s right to choose! So how are you celebrating? Need ideas? [click to continue…]

AS IT TURNS OUT, my brother T has been in the throes of paramount brotherly obligations lately. And no, I do not mean he has been on the phone coaching me through my teaching dilemmas with sage big brother advice. He happens to be the best man in his BFF’s upcoming wedding. And in true T fashion, he is taking this duty very seriously. And by very seriously, I mean he has been planning a blow-out bachelor party in Las Vegas. When we talked about it on the phone, I was all “Whaaat?! Don’t you think that’s a little extravagant?” And he was all, “No.”
Brotherhood means business, I guess.

WOWSERS. APPARENTLY A CHAP NAMED Chris Harrison, who happens to be a Ph.D. student in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon, has put together this amazing looking infographic on how “he” and “she” are used in Google’s digital books archive, which now contains 200 years worth of published material. (Completely mind blowing, right?!) The graph shows the 120 most common words used after “he” and “she,” ordered in decreasing frequency. Like I said: wow. But how are we to interpret such a thing? I‘M DIGGING this photo post about girlfriends over at the blog size too small. It’s so sweet! This holiday season, I’m on the road, traveling in Japan with my boyfriend. We’re having a fantastic time, full of sticky rice balls and silly awkward bowing exchanges with strangers, but today, I’m feeling especially pangy for the Christmas-y comfort of my hometown girlfriends. Le sigh.

MY BROTHER T IS NOTORIOUSLY hard to shop for. This is not to say that he isn’t grateful. (He’s actually a total sweetie about receiving gifts.) It’s just that he’s that guy at every holiday function who loves being the Santa–you know, breaking the bank to make everyone’s gift wishes come true. (Think Michael Scott as Secret Santa in season two of The Office.) So naturally, it’s tricky to buy for the boy whose personal Christmas shopping motto is “go hard or go home.” Is this person in your family, too? If so, take heed (clockwise from top left): [click to continue…]

WE’VE TALKED GIFTS before on The Sister Project. (Here’s a great post from Marion on the subject.) But this winter, I thought I’d do a little gift guide for the many sisters and one big brother in my life. This week: (mostly) handmade goods under $40 for your adorable sister-friend! LOVING THIS ROUND-UP of 22 shamelessly sexist ads from the past. Some of them I’ve posted here before, and others (like the one above) are new to me. I thought the ol’ wifey-don’t-cry-because-you-can’t-cook number might be good for this week as some of us prepare to cook Thanksgiving dinner. Lets hope this putz husband stays in the olden days and doesn’t show up at our holidays!
