My Kind of Sister (and Writer): Flannery O’Connor

by Anastasia on March 25, 2009

flanneryoconnorSOME TIDBITS ABOUT ONE of my favorite writers of all time, Flannery O’Connor, on her birthday:

1. Her collection of work includes two novels and 32 pieces of short fiction.

2. She was once quoted as describing her young self as a “pigeon-toed child with a receding chin and a you-leave-me-alone-or-I’ll-bite-you complex.”

3. At the age of 6, she trained a chicken to walk backwards. She, and the chicken, were featured in the Pathe News.

4. Her native Georgia has seeped into all the cracks of her writing. She became famous for her Southern Gothic style.

5. I love that she said, “It is the business of the artist to uncover the strangeness of truth.” I couldn’t agree more.

Flannery’s “A Good man is Hard to Find” is a quiet force which suddenly pushed me face down in the gravel, uninjured but with the ever-lasting taste of dirt and asphalt. Yet, after reading your brief “tidbits” I want to know more. I want to get back to being the vulnerable reader and see if I can stay on my feet.

Excellent. I love reading O’ Conner as well. Tidbit #2 that you mention reminds me somewhat of her character Hulga in “Good Country People,” my favorite short fiction piece by her. I recommend it to her fans that have not read it. There are many obvious good qualities about it and others that may take a second look. I personally find the names of the characters fun in that sardonic, gothic way :). Kudos to TSP for the post and happy reading everyone! Here’s a link to full text “Good Country People,” if anyone wants a look: http://www.geocities.com/cyber_explorer99/oconnorgoodcountry.html
