Horror of Horrors. (Seriously.)

WOULDN’T YOU RATHER die a bingo-playing spinster than be subjected to this kind of stupid ridicule? This detergent ad from 1936 starts, “Isn’t it natural for every girl to want popularity, romance, a devoted husband? What a pity, then to see lovely girls like those above losing out because they are careless about perspiration odor in underthings.” Poor Hildegarde over there on the right. At 27, she’s practically a cadaver.

It’s interesting to think about all of these sexist ads in terms of the female-dominated typing pools at these ad agencies. Most likely the women typing up all of the communication and text for these campaigns were their very victims.

Poor Hildegarde! You can tell she deliberated over that bow shirt.

That is an all too eerie point, Wallace. And if Mad Men has taught us anything, it’s that rampant institutionalized sexism made so many women believe they deserved this kind of subjugation!

I feel for Hildegarde, because I, too, have deliberated over kitten bow tops. True story.
