THIS IS ALSO kind of old news. (Sorry friends.) But surely it’s not too late for me to express my deep sadness over the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital in downtown Manhattan after serving the public for 160 years. St. Vincent’s was the only hospital in NYC that supported home births, and since closing, it is now be illegal for more than half of New York City’s licensed midwives to deliver babies at home. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! Here’s a picture of my mother when she was my age. Isn’t her 1970s style amazing? (She rocks the center part and aviators so well.) I love you, Mama! What are you doing with your mom to celebrate?

EW, WHY DOES Sex and the City keep betraying their awesome roots by making horrible movies that involve living happily ever after whilst traveling to foreign lands? (Did you see the first movie? Will you see this one?) [click to continue…]

QUESTION: IS THE COMMERCIAL for HPV prevention that keeps repeating “what if?” (like some nightmare anaphora poem) ruining anyone else’s life? No? Well it makes me have a near panic attack every time it comes on Hulu. What commercials are driving you nuts these days? Dish it. And speaking of scary ads, here are some vintage gems.

IT’S PROBABLY NO NEWS to you that I have been M.I.A. on the blog scene as of late (like, seriously late). As some of you know, I’m in grad school right now. And all semester I’ve been getting my butt kicked by school work and stress-induced skin rashes (don’t ask) and teaching work. The good news is: it’s almost the end of the semester! So with this post, I’m officially back on the blog scene and I promise not to abandon you fine readers again. (Cross my heart.) What better to kick off my return than with the cutest tiniest horse ever (the latest in my “If I Were the Stork” series)? My thoughts exactly…

A YEAR AGO when Margaret, Marion, Paige and I were just setting sail on murky blog waters with the mission to spread the word on sisterhood, we were nervous. Who would read our ramblings? Could we really write about sisters and sisterhood for an indefinite time? But we came together with you, our sweet readers (in our own sort of sisterhood) and have officially been breathing life into The Sister Project for one year! In celebration of this milestone, and as a toast to more blog-birthdays to come, here are a few favorite posts (mine and yours) from the last year to read again or discover anew: [click to continue…]

THIS IS OUR YEAR FOR A THANKSGIVING with a twist. I’m living in my first apartment that really feels like home (hooray!), so last week my mom packed a bag and drove down the coast to spend the holiday with me. We’re going to be eating an all-vegetarian meal with some dear friends in Charlotte. On the menu is old-fashioned corn pudding, apple crisp, mashed potatoes, sautéed kale, and baked squash with apples. What won’t we be eating, you ask (turkey and ham aside)? Seaweed. Yup, that’s right. Because we already tried that on Thanksgiving. [click to continue…]

Scream off: Oprah vs. Susie Greene
NO ONE HAS EVER ASKED me for procrastination tips (which is surprising, considering how hiding from looming work is something Cancerians are famous for). But if anyone is interested in mastering the fine art of procrastination, here’s my first tip: jezebel.com. They have strange videos, celebrity news, nonsense and an array stories on women’s issues posted daily. This week, the editors are paying video montage tribute to two of television’s favorite women as they gracefully exit off-screen. Yes, I’m talking about Oprah and Susie Greene. Who would have known these two would have so much in common? Turns out they both can scream (one with significantly more profanity, however). Watch them here and report: who do you think wins for greatest lung capacity?

The Werewolf Attorney (of '30 Rock'), The Bearded Lady, and The Mall-Walker
THINGS ARE GETTING a little grizzly down here in North Carolina. I’ve got assignments coming out my ears, and my closet seems to have projectile vomited all my clothes into the many corners of my apartment. So please forgive me for the lack of blogging presence while I gather myself. But luckily I did get to take a break on Halloween last weekend, for which I dressed up in one of Erin Dollar’s fantastic homemade beards! Remember this post on Erin from way-back-when? Well, I’m now officially in the sisterhood of bearded ladies. Hooray!
