THIS YEAR’S “5 Under 35″ fiction selections from The National Book Foundation features works from four women writers! How exciting! I must admit that last month, I was quite disappointed to read a Huffington Post article that labeled a whole slew of amazing female writers as “overrated.” So it’s great to see that some female literary fiction is getting good press, too. Have you read any of these books? (And if so, how did they rate?) I haven’t yet, but they’re currently on their way to the top of my to-read list.

CONFESSION: I ONCE CHECKED OUT The Idiot’s Guide to Quilting from the Greensboro Public Library. And then it sat in my dorm room with some fabric scraps for several months collecting late fees before I finally returned it. So I haven’t had much luck getting the basics down (which makes me feel super lame next to the women in this video). But every time I see fantastic women creating beautiful quilts I’m in love. It’s love. (Like that lovely bespectacled lady says.) Now if this isn’t sisterhood, I don’t know what is.
(Thanks to my crafty friend Cara for posting this video!)

"Rather than come to blows with his sister over the missing Lego tree, he sat beneath his prayer flags and let the feelings wash over him." (Photo: Dave Lauridsen; Dwell)
THE HILARIOUS PHOTO BLOG Unhappy Hipsters posts photos from trendy design magazines along with little satirical captions. I always find the captions about kids especially entertaining (like these little dudes and this gal). But I laughed out loud when I saw this new post about a brother brooding over his sister and her inability to share Legos. Love it!

FROM TIME TO TIME I love posting on here about sister-themed books ( um, no I’m not talking about Sweet Valley High) that I’ve come across and enjoyed, because it always starts a juicy dialogue about what everyone has been reading lately. My current recommendation? [click to continue…]

good brother...good style...I'm in love.
LET ME TELL YOU: watching the MTV “reality” show The City is one of my favorite guilty pleasures ever. As you may know, this week marked the new season premiere. (Did you watch?) And so while I lay in bed soaking up all the new season gossip and Kelly Cutrone quips, I noticed a painfully handsome man sitting around at People’s Revolution. And then he spoke! And MTV told me that he was a designer for a brand called Nicholas K! And thus I put my stalker skills to work. [click to continue…]

ALMOST 1,000 MILES AWAY from Marina Abramović’s current performance piece at MoMA, I have been deeply moved by the photos of visitors to her exhibition, The Artist Is Present. In this piece, Abramović waits at a table all day and people are invited to sit across from her and stare into her eyes. [click to continue…]

THIS PHOTO SHOOT of real-sized women in next month’s issue of V Magazine! Such beautiful styling. What do you think?

SPEAKING OF BEAUTIFUL braids, have you seen (or participated in) the flickr pool Braid Wednesday? It features the beautiful braids of hundreds of flickr users–kind of like a mini braid sisterhood! And some of my favorite style bloggers like Kate, Alyson, and Jenny (to name a few) have been inspired to get braiding. I’m still trying to master a French braid in my own hair (I currently have pathetic hand-eye coordination), but when I finally do, you readers will be the first to know.

I‘M PRETTY SURE my lease agreement doesn’t include a clause on how baby farm animals are more than welcome. Darn. But thanks to photographer Sharon Montrose, I can now invite these darling little animals into my home. Lamb or baby porcupine? I can’t decide…

THE MUSTACHE SISTERS (aka Aya Kakeda and Nina Frenkel) are friends, illustrators, and Hungary-enthusiasts. They found each other in NYC and decided to pool their talents/passions and make a large wearable mustache costume to compete in the Mustache Contest sponsored by the Hungarian Cultural Center in New York. “To us, ‘Mustache Sisters’ is a celebration of collaborative creativity, frienship and fun,” Aya and Nina say. Oooh, I love it! (And how about those peep-toed shoes?)
