B ECAUSE BIG BUSINESS was one of only three video cassettes we had in our house when I was a child (and I didn’t really want to watch Jesus Christ Superstar or Cinema Paradiso when I got home from school), I used to watch this movie constantly. I eventually memorized all the lines, and I took to waltzing around our house saying things to my brother like, “Oh, it’s me with a bad haircut!”
As a result, my most iconic image of sisterhood from the early 90s came from Big Business, which tells the story of two sets of twins mixed up at birth. It is an ever-comedic tale of nurture vs. nature. (One set of twins lives in New York City, the other hails from a tiny town in West Virginia.) Their names, coincidentally, are the same: Rose and Sadie (played by Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler, respectively). In the scene shown above, the sisters finally meet face to face after a weekend of mistaken identities at the Plaza Hotel. If you don’t already know this movie it’s a must-see on TSP’s sister flick list.
And I can’t help but be reminded (by both the hair colors and nurture vs. nature story) of our own TSP sisters Margaret and Marion Roach!

That is truly one of the funniest – laugh out loud – scenes and my favorite, in the history of movies. Very good medicine. Those women are the best as sisters as actors and human beings.
This movie is even funnier when watched with Anastasia because of the extensive quoting.
oh wow anastasia i have not seen this movie in probably over 12 years but i am going to have to revisit it…maybe with jocelyn because we used to love it!
