HOW COOL IS THIS: Girls Write Now provides high school aged girls interested in writing with one-on-one mentoring from professional women writers in New York. It’s a remarkable sisterhood of young women, many of whom are facing profound daily challenges (40% of the mentees in the program are immigrants). Here’s a snippet about the program from the Girls Write Now website:

We are a close-knit community of women writers—educators, editors, journalists, playwrights, publishers, advertising and PR professionals, literary agents, and more—on a mission. Since 1998 we’ve provided guidance, support, and opportunities for New York City’s high school girls to develop their creative, independent voices, explore careers in professional writing, and learn how to make healthy choices in school, career, and life.

The success rate of Girls Write Now on nurturing the next generation of women writers has been astounding. In a city where over one million students attend public school and nearly half will not graduate high school on time, the seniors in the Girls Write Now program have a 100% success rate of college acceptance.

While even the concept of a community of female writers has impressed me (as a writer and a sister-seeker), I’ve been profoundly moved by the personal stories of sisterhood between mentors and mentees in Girls Write Now. Last year, the New York Times featured an article about the program, focusing on 16 year-old Chinese immigrant PinChang Huang and her mentor, Deborah Kolben, a former managing editor at the Village Voice.

NBC Nightly News recently reported on Girls Write Now, following a 17-year-old Tibetan refugee mentored by educator Nancy Shapiro. They also interviewed the women of this sisterhood, young and old, during a year-end reading of the girls’ work. On the Girls Write Now website, you’ll also find biographies of the programs mentees and mentors. I implore you to poke around on the site, which is a community in itself.

So glad to learn about this. This connection between youth and people who enjoy writing and are successful at it is
very important and inspiring.
