FOR TEN YEARS I’ve been living on an anti-inflammatory diet. This was brought on by a friend’s suggestions, and since that friend is America’s premier science writer, I took the suggestion seriously. In the years on the diet, my cholesterol dropped, my blood pressure dropped and I lost (and maintained) weight — oh yeah, and my pain went away. Now, his advice is a book. By him. And sisters, you can throw away your other books on nutrition, health and weight loss, read this, and change forever how you live. I promise.
The writer is Gary Taubes, who for many years now has been an honorary Roach sister. It’s no small distinction, or so we like to think. Honorary Roach sisters are born, not made, and as the years pass, the fates throw us together and we delight in the understanding of what we have in common. We felt so when we met Paige and Anastasia, of TSP. My husband is an honorary Roach sister, and damn proud of it, as he’ll tell anyone who asks. Gary, the other honorary Roach sister of the male persuasion, is the author of the fine new book, Why We Get Fat And What to do About It. Just out by Knopf, you can get it here.
Gary has been causing a stir for years with his brilliant work on how what makes us fat also makes us sick. Or is that phrase new to you? It’s true: what makes us fat does also make us sick, though what it is that makes us fat may surprise you. Read the book. Change your life. It’s only sisterly of me to advise you to do so.

Marion, thank you kindly for bringing this book to our/my attention. It sounds so like what I desperately need. I just ordered it and can’t wait to get enthused about changing my life at the age of almost-70.
Love to you.
Marion, I probably need this book. I had no idea you’d been on that type of diet so thanks for this post. Must look into this. And I appreciate you dropping by. xoxoxo
Hello sisters,
Thanks for mentioning the book … and to Gary Taubes for tweeting about it … on my way to the library to pick it up now.
Hi, Bob. And welcome to TSP, where we do love our brothers. Gary is a right. Period. He’s been right about this food madness for years, and I am so glad to hear from another member of his fan base. Thanks for stopping by, and do come back soon.
Somehow I missed this here (I KNOW – I should be paying better attention!) but I certainly didn’t miss the NYT article about sugar.
Long story short, I too borrowed the book from my local library and since March of this year, have been using the principles to gently redirect my family’s eating habits.
I’m happy to see Taubes in the honorary sisterhood. Truth telling – especially when it comes to how we treat our own bodies – is always a good idea. Write on, Taubes!
Reading Taubes with great interest and appreciate you speaking in a balanced way about a subject that is fairly explosive.
