I KNIT, SHE DOESN’T. It’s one of the stories of our she said, she said lives. The fact is that I have a sweater/sock/hat/something for every high-emotional holy day of my adult life.
There is my “bullet-proof” sweater I knit myself when I was still single to stitch while talking myself away from a relationship that was killing me (no real guns involved; clever people, we wielded only emotional projectiles). There is my-mother-in-law’s funeral sweater knit on the drive to and from Indiana. (Before that there was the my-mother-in-law-gets-diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease sweater, knit on the drive to-and-from Indiana to label her kitchen drawers and simplify her life; I barely got to wear one when I had to put the next one on the needles.) There’s the Gulf War sweater, knit while I sat semi-stunned by a war with commercial breaks. Fibroid-surgery-socks, and the cat-just-died hat; don’t get me wrong, I knit during happy times, too, but those projects rarely get named.
Until now. Now everything I knit I’ll be naming after my online sisters, ever since Paige started a knitalong group on Ravelry, that uber-deluxe knitting community. (You will need an “invitation” to join Ravelry; just a formality, so don’t be put off.) Now my sweaters/socks/hats will all have the prefix of TSP, as in our group, appropriately named thesisterprojectknits.
Which is where I met Needles of Iron, as she likes to be called. And she, in turn, introduced all of us—via her blog—to her sister (that’s them together a few years ago, tee hee, in a photo from Needles of Iron’s post). This is worth its weight in cashmere.
Sisters, knitting. Knitting sisters. Got a sister who just won’t knit? Don’t despair: Join up, grab a sister, and knit on.

First, happy blog-iversary.
Second, Gosh. If I knew people were going to be coming over, I would have spruced up the place and baked a cake! (Maybe even a Shaker Cake!)
Thanks for the wonderful compliment to think enough of my post to make reference to it. I am both humbled and pleased.
I knit, and I taught my younger sister to knit, and just this last weekend, my youngest sister (there as 5 of us total) as well. I like to spread the obsession around! Will go check out the ravelry group.
Welcome, Jen. I am the welcoming committee of one today while Marion is at meetings, and as you have already learned, not a knitter. Marion has not tried to teach me, so I fear you may have given her an idea…uh-oh. Do come see us again soon.
Hey, Becky: Welcome. Well, yes, we should have called before dropping by, but as you can see from number 22 on the list, http://thesisterproject.com/roach/first-from-marion-25-random-facts-about-our-childhood/ that manners thing always made me just laugh. So glad to have you here. Please visit regularly.
Hi, Jen: We’ll welcome you to that Ravelry group, you can be sure. How cool is that: You taught 2 sisters to knit. Who taught you? My grandmother (of the aforementioned manners list in my comment just above this) taught me. At least some of the things she taught me stuck. Sigh. Please come back soon.
Marion,
Do you remember that when you were waiting for your daughter you and I both knit her the Same Exact Sweater? (Chenille, “Button Button” by Jil Eaton and Minnowknits.) Mine was lavender and had a ridiculous hat. Yours was navy. That sweater was the first thing I ever knit. And I have not stopped since.
Oh, Elizabeth, I surely do. My daughter wore that hat, and thank goodness for it, since these days no hat will do with my child. Oh, I remember the feel of that chenille as we waited for our children. So sweet. Thanks. Did you see this? http://thesisterproject.com/roach/knitting-up-a-womb/
Oh my.
I have seen that – I don’t miss my womb and won’t be replacing it!
Happily I have not found any other knittable anatomical parts on the web. I did go twice on Saturday — twice — into the local good knitting store and both times came out empty-handed. Not good. And they were having a 20% off sale. I simply could not decide. The Sister Project Knits Ravelry group http://www.ravelry.com/groups/thesisterprojectknits has completed it’s small scarf and we’re looking for out next project. HELP!
Marion-
We have so much in common! I knit that very same sweater when I was at St. Lawrence! It was the first sweater I ever knit…and I still have it (I don’t wear it but I still have it)! I think its called the Portuguese Fisherman Pullover sweater! I love the website!
Best,
Tracy
Welcome, Tracy. Oh, that’s too funny! But what do you mean “wear it?” You mean I’m supposed to wear all the sweaters I have? Oh dear. Ha! Thanks for the compliment. Speaking of knitting, did you see this? My absolute finito-ideal favorite knitted item? Keep coming back, please. There’s more on our needles.
