Shaken, Stirred, and Otherwise: Redheads in a Glass

by marionroach on January 13, 2010

glassPEOPLE ARE JEALOUS OF REDHEADS. Even the drinks named for us reflect a certain envy, as they should, of course. I mean who would agree to a mere Rusty Nail, when you can sip on a Redhead in Bed?

Collecting drink recipes has long been a habit of mine, dating back to my recipe box file addiction, and the punch recipes of my grandmother. (Wowza, but those women drank some serious stuff while playing bridge). Though I can say with great certainty that not one of those potables packs the same punch as a Redhead on the Moon.

Have some redheaded friends, or merely friends who love redheads? Invite them over, get out your blender, and after a couple of these, everyone will look just like Joan Holloway. If you squint. Which you’ll be certainly be doing if you start mixing your Redhead in Bed with your Slutty Redhead, or your Absolut Redhead with your basic Irish Redhead, not to mention what might transpire after you shake up a batch of Frothy Redheads and drink ‘em down.

glassNeed some video instruction on how to handle a Slutty Redhead? Who wouldn’t?  Right here.

We are ALL attentive of/to Redheads (if not jealous, and certainly in love w/ …).

My (and Glen’s) favorite/fabulous RED drink, strangely named “Black”, or more specifically “Negroni”:
1/3 Gin (use a good one, PLEASE !!)… See More
1/3 Vermouth (sweet and RED !!)
1/3 Bitters (Campari is good (RED again !!)
Blood Orange garnish (even MORE RED !!)

Obviously, there are endless adjustments to the recipe, more sweet, more bitter, more gin … whatever …

It’s a VERY adult drink, in spite of the sweetness. Perhaps a variation could be a “Bitter/Sweet Redhead” !!

Our introduction to Negroni is a wonderful story for another time (during a visit to Riola di Vergato).

Gotta go, the gin is calling !!

Welcome to TSP, Anthony. What a joy it is to have you here. Thanks so much for the recipe, as well as for the suggestion of the fine name for the drink. Please come back soon for more.

My sister once had to work as a cocktail waitress in Vegas for a magazine story, and I remember her tales of many sloppy dudes laughing hysterically as they ordered “redheaded sluts.” I’ve never had any of the redhead drinks, but I do have to confess that my identity seems firmly entrenched in the color of my hair. Also: Joan Holloway is the best thing to happen to buxom redheads since Jessica Rabbit. Love this post, Marion!

When my husband and I were first dating, one of our favorite summer things to do was spend the day zipping around the lake in his ’38 Chris Craft, and then spend the evening on his deck drinking Campari and sodas. We made them by the pitcher. I loved the fizzy redness of that drink. It seemed so festive and perfect for young love!

Hi, Sara: Lovely to see you again. Oh, my, what writers sometimes have to do for a story. Yes, my identity is very much defined by my hair color, and always has been. And I agree with you on Joan. We’re indebted to her, as well as to Jessica Rabbit. Come back soon.

Hi, Sandy: Love this image of you two, the pitchers of red drinks, and the young love. How fabulous. Thanks for bringing it to us. And do come back son for more.
