IT’S NEVER TOO LATE to have a happy childhood, or so Tom Robbins told us in Still Life with Woodpecker. And while it might makes us laugh, it’s not a phrase most people like to hear. I know: I tried it repeatedly on Margaret for years, and got a sound dressing-down, as we used to say in Victorian novels, as well as in the WASP households that resemble them.
And if that weren’t bad enough, years after trying “get happy,” a foolish little sister sister might be tempted to say to her sister “get over it.”
Some little sisters might. This little sister did. And, amazingly, I lived to tell, as well as to change my proverbial tune. Now, I have only this to say to Margaret, and I say it regularly: Good material. Use it.
