A Slideshow of Vintage Delight: Meet the Delightful Brox Sisters

by marionroach on April 12, 2010

IT STARTED WITH a single photo (above), glimpsed on the Library of Congress site while I was researching something else entirely. A picture of three beautifully dressed women simply stopped me, made me change direction, and abandon one train of thought for another. This happens to writers; it’s a hazard, as well as a joy, of the profession. Want to talk about joy? “Meeting” the Brox sisters gave me plenty, which I’ll share with you in this slideshow and a video:

You know how we love our mystery sisters here at TSP, and never more than when the mystery is revealed, and we learn something of the pictured sisters’ lives. Well, when I saw the women above I had to find out who they were, so I did some digging and discovered that the Brox sisters were an American trio of singing siblings.

Born in Tennessee as Dagmar, Lorayne and Kathleen, they performed as Bobbe, Lorayne and Patricia, changing their family name from Brock to Brox for theater marquees, and hitting their professional high during the 1920s and 1930s, including a performance in the 1929 Marx Brothers movie The Cocoanuts. All three lived well into the late 20th century, the last one being Bobbe, who died in May 1999, at the age of 98.

Their 1932 rendition of Falling in Love Again is such a joy to behold:

To say that the camera loves them is an understatement of epic proportion, as evidenced by their file at the National Photo Company Collection at The Library of Congress. Just get a look at these vintage sisters, and see if you don’t agree. A sampling is int he little show below.

Click on the first thumbnail to start the show, then toggle from slide to slide using the arrows below each image. And enjoy!
