Hail, Mary: The Birth of the Bra

by marionroach on August 7, 2010

THE BRA’S BIRTHDAY. Now there is something to celebrate, sisters. And a centennial birthday, at that. Imagine: 100 years have gone by since the first American woman said—now repeat after me, sisters—“How in the world am I going to these into that?” Oh, yes, sisters, let’s light some birthday candles and throw a few bras on the pyre, since it’s a birthday you don’t want to miss. The Sisterhood of the Dog, Part 5

by marionroach on August 2, 2010

THERE WAS A time when our dogs divided us. It happens in neighborhoods, and it did, in ours. Each of us lived behind our own invisible electric fence, keeping our dogs in our own territories, allowing for no mixing of our pedigreed charges. The humans walked, we waved, but we knew little of one another’s lives, except, perhaps, that it was the woman in each home who walked the dog. That much was clear. And for a while that’s how it was: Not much contact, little to say, we walked our dogs along the perimeter of each other’s lives. [click to continue…]

Stepping in For Men, Part 2

by marionroach on July 31, 2010

YouTube Preview ImageWOMEN PLAYING MEN, or specifically, male roles, was the theme of a post last week, provoked by the new Angelina Jolie movie, Salt. And while I did not think of it at first, over time—and after some of your comments—it  occurred to me that my single favorite movie, inhabiting my single favorite performance by anyone in any movie, is a classic film in which a woman plays a part originally written for a man. Know which one? [click to continue…]

Lives Like Loaded Guns: The Dickinson Sisters

by marionroach on July 29, 2010

A LOADED GUN. It’s not necessarily a phrase you expect from Emily Dickinson. Or is it? Well, if you know about her sister, her sister-in-law, and the woman down the street, you might think differently, especially after reading the new book that aptly uses the firearms phrase in the title. Kaboom: What a family. Or didn’t you know? [click to continue…]

Summer Writing Slump? Not Here

by marionroach on July 27, 2010

THE SUMMER SLUMP. This is a tough time for writers–that time of year when the most seductive set of temptations to not write beckon: the great outdoors and all its wonders. I mean, who can write in this weather? Who can write when you could instead: swim/sail/run/play tennis/golf/hike, whatever? You can. That is, if you’ll willing to do a simple things. Are you? Then come along. [click to continue…]

What a Difference a Dame Makes

by marionroach on July 21, 2010

TRADITIONAL MALE ROLES are heightened and added to when played by women. Think not? Have you seen Alien, The 40 Year Old Virgin, or the new Angelina Jolie vehicle, Salt? Major roles in all three were originally written for men, and, as played by women, became unforgettable. The sisterhood of stepping in–and stepping things up–is a good one, indeed. SISTERS UNDER PRESSURE is always a good place from which to plot a story. After all, with all that history between any set of sisters (you didn’t really think you are the only one who has issues with your sister did you?), it’s a good bet that if you squeeze the pair a bit, some interesting things will happen. They do, in a new novel, and they do it quite well, indeed. [click to continue…]

Home, Home on the Divorce Ranch

by marionroach on July 16, 2010

AND YOU THOUGHT your family home was strange. How about growing upon a “divorce ranch?” No, that is not the name of a new reality show—or maybe it is; who knows? In this case, I’m referring to one of the famous places where women who once wanted out of their marriages could live as “residents” while awaiting a Nevada divorce. Want to take a peek inside? THERE’S CAMP, HIGH CAMP, and then there is sister camp, arguably the campiest-camp of all, certainly in the world of movies, where the reigning sister-camp pic is, of course, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” Happily it is not alone in the genre. Oh yes, there are others, my new favorite of which is “The Queen’s Sister.” Up for some sister camp, sisters? Here’s your film. [click to continue…]
