My First Year as a Sister

by paige on December 3, 2009

button logoWAY BACK WHEN, when lovely Margaret Roach first told me of the brainstorm that would eventually become The Sister Project, I was a little uncertain about how I might fit into her plans. After all, as you know by now, I am not a sister. I’m an only child, and I have to admit that my lack of biological qualifications had me a little stumped at the beginning of this adventure. But (as you also all know by now) I am a mama to a sister, I am beyond lucky to have many, many incredible women in my life who I think of as my sister-friends, and I am a born-to-the-sisterhood (thanks, Mom) feminist. The result of all these disparate blessings? I am, despite my own sibling-less state, a big believer that indeed, sisterhood is powerful.

All this writing about sisterhood, whether in the kitchen, back seat, or recesses of my memory, has been a great reminder of exactly how much I need and treasure my sister-y relationships. In the spirit of celebrating them, and my year here at TSP, I thought I’d share a list of my favorite posts. (I have faves from Margaret, Marion and Anastasia, too, but those will have to wait for the next anniversary!)

Thanks to you all for a year’s worth of reading, commenting and sharing of yourselves. It’s been quite a ride, one I can’t wait to continue. Here’s to you, sissies.

1. The girl and the post that started it all. My own ‘little sister’, aka The Rock. As tough as Dwayne Johnson, but way cuter.

2. 25 Random Things About Me, wherein I embarrass myself in about 17 different ways. ‘Nuff said.

3. What I Have In Common With Eva Gabor. It’s not the two sisters, nor the five husbands.

4. Thanksgiving, or, The Control Freak’s Lament. Yet another tale of my embarrassing personality defects, and the sister-friends and family members who stay by my side in spite of them.

5. Apple pie, with a side of family dysfunction. An adult woman and her mother living under the same roof add up to either a unique kind of sisterhood, or a bad sitcom. So far, we’re going for the former. (Make sure to read the sequel.)

6. Cooking sisters (and brothers) bound by foodie devotion. My fave food blogs, both the original, and the updated version. Now this is a family.

7. All the sisters of the Ladies Auxiliaries, cooking their hearts out: meatloaf, potato salad, cranberry surprise, and beyond. Now THIS is a sisterhood, for sure.

8. RIP Gourmet. Gourmet magazine was the heart of a particular sisterhood for me and my mom, and the pain of the loss is still a little raw. (Pardon the pun.)

9. Oh, the raw genius on display over in the TSP Galleries! It makes my heart stop. Tracking down and profiling all these creative sisters may have been the absolute greatest joy of the last year. Elsita was one of the very first, but you’ve got to get to know Amanda, and Julianna and Bonnie, too.

10. Back in June, I wrote about a friend’s search for words of solace and meaning, and sisters across our crazy spectrum leapt into the discussion passion and wisdom.

To my treasured friends Margaret, Marion and Anastasia: Happy Anniversary! And to the rest of you reading this, I’d love to know what your favorite sisterhood stories are, whether ones you’ve read here or ones you’ve yet to share with us. Join the party.

Not a bad first year, sister! It’s been a pleasure for many – especially me – watching you navigate the sticky, ultimately bonding world of sisterhood. Over here, just happy to read your words and be in it. Happy Birthday, Paige.
