Knit Me a World

YouTube Preview ImageKNITTERS AND CROCHETERS know that there’s some magic to what they do, taking raw materials and turning them into precisely structured creations. Twin sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim have tapped into that magic to use the simplest crocheting to model some of the most complex mathematical structures known. The results are beautiful, and mindblowing. Thousands of women (and a few men) have joined together over the last 3-1/2 years to create an enormous model of the vanishing coral reefs, and along the way have created a work of art that’s been exhibited worldwide. Not only that, the crocheted models have implications for higher mathematics, and ultimately, the very shape of the universe. Hard to believe? Mindblowing? Watch the video above for an explanation of the project. And for more, visit the Institute for Figuring, the organization created by the sisters to help people understand abstract mathematical concepts through playful (and indeed, creative) means.

This is lovely, remarkable and inspiring. How marvelous. What a grand project. Of course it was started by sisters.
