I F YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS who are bookworms (in the “read to me, Mommy!” sense, like mine) you may already know the work of Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Her sweet tale Little Pea is one of our family’s favorites, but her extra-literary projects were unknown to me until a tip from a favorite blogger sent me off into the larger world of Amy’s amazing work.
Amy’s project, entitled The Beckoning of Lovely, turned out to be a perfect fit for me right now: I’m trying my hand at a new creative outlet (neither cooking nor knitting involved, and I promise to reveal all one of these days) and because of that, and the usual chaotic state of my life, I have been spending a lot of time pondering Marion’s latest list o’ brilliance, about how we manage our time, or don’t.
So Amy’s reminder to respond to the call of beauty, to make something, make it beautiful, make it with friends, old and new, is the perfect way for me to take a breath and appreciate what I am doing (instead of what I am not.) I’m not too proud to admit I shed a tear or two of joy and recognition as well. I hope you enjoy Amy’s video and the project it represents as much as I did, and be sure to explore her website for more of her videos and more about her.
What is speaking to you these days? Do you feel a deep calling to create, to write, to reconnect with family or friends? Share your discoveries with your sisters.
(Special thanks to my old friend Gretchen over at The Happiness Project for pointing me in Amy’s direction. Gretchen’s lovely, too.)

Ooooh, oooooh – I wrote about this video on my blog too!(http://tiny.cc/WkRqH) And about how wild cool is it that one person (or site or blog) leads to another and another…and it’s like we’ve got our arms around the whole world!! This video makes me tear up EVERY time I see it!! So fantastic – thanks Paige, for reminding me of it!!
Karen–So glad you’re back, and yes, I feel exactly the same way about the incredible community online. Digital sisterhood, indeed!
Little Pea is a favourite in this house, so I was drawn to this post. Then you had to bring up the calling to create – something I challenge myself with and struggle with every day. Some days it is too much to think about. And those are the days I play with fabric or veggies.
Like Cheryl, as a recovering perfectionist I periodically experience the “thinking too much”. I often need to shut my inner judge down and simply do for the doing. The Beckoning of Lovely appeals on precisely that level; the beauty there of trying something without knowing ahead of time how it will turn out. Seeing that video somehow grants me permission; leaves me giddily loosened from a need for control. The results seems to me to be more freestanding; creations unto themselves as opposed to “MY” creations. More midwife than mother perhaps? A distinction with a difference I deeply appreciate. Thanks for sharing this!
That video made my face all wet. It’s the innocence and the willingness and the playfulness and the trustingness and the, yes, what else to call it but, the loveliness of the whole thing.
sigh!
Oh, this was lovely. Thank you so much for sharing.
Very uplifting.
