Happy Birthday, Emmylou Harris

by paige on April 2, 2009

YouTube Preview ImageI CAME LATE to Emmylou Harris’ party. I’m not sure how I missed her and her music, given all the years I spent immersed in the female singer-songwriter universe, but not until she released the luminous, perfect, completely consuming CD Red Dirt Girl in 2000 did I jump into her music and voice, and I fell completely in love. Since then, I’ve caught up, a bit, but she’s got a discography that’s long and deep and beautiful, so I still have more to discover. This song, “Red Dirt Girl,” from the album of the same name, remains a favorite, and it seems the perfect choice to mark Emmylou’s 62nd birthday. While it’s hardly celebratory, it is as loving a portrait of a sister-friend as you’re likely to hear. Listen, and wish Emmylou all the best.

I, too, just recently discovered Emmylou. Had always heard about her, etc., but I’m such a Joni girl and somehow it felt like cheating. But when I finally gave her a listen I then had to download like three albums off iTunes in one sitting. Red Dirt Girl is my favorite, I think. And her rendition of Mr. Sandman is great, too.
