I WAS COMPLETELY CHARMED the other morning by a profile I heard on NPR of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. Three guesses as to who they are. And if you’re a Bollywood connoisseur, sorry, you’re disqualified.
Asha and Lata, yes, sisters, are India’s leading “playback” singers, meaning that they provide the vocals to many, MANY of the songs performed in Bollywood musicals. (And, given that the Indian film industry produces hundreds of these films every year–that’s a lot of singing.) Each sister has been credited, in fact, with the most recordings of anyone in history. Who actually has the lead, 76 year old Asha or 80 year old Lata, isn’t clear, but both women seem to have recorded well over 10,000 songs.I’ out of breath just thinking about it.
Check out the NPR profile of Asha, and let us know some of your favorite singers, and songs, of sisterhood. We’ve got loads of our favorite sister songs to share with you, too.
