Bastille Day a L’Americaine

by paige on July 14, 2010

JULY IS A SUPER MONTH when it comes to festivities: Picnics galore, BBQ on the Fourth, and then it’s time to channel your inner Parisienne come the 14th, Bastille Day.

Since I haven’t a clue when I’ll get back to Paris to celebrate properly, I’ll make do with my fave Francophilic food blogs, and a perfect Salade Niçoise. Though I learned recently that this version, popularized in America by Julia Child, takes quite a few liberties with the authentic French tradition, I can’t be bothered to mess with perfection…especially since I’ve even grown my own green beans, tomatoes and potatoes this year. (Can you believe how much our TSP sister Margaret has rubbed off on me?)

How about you? Will you be popping champagne and swinging sparklers around on the end of a baguette tonight? Celebrate with your sisters, and be sure to tell us all about it!

Actually, the fireworks will probably wake the kids up… We are pretty much right on the French border, so we get to see them every year…

I was home for July 14 but unfortunately there were no fireworks. After days of ‘canicule’ the weather turned to rain and wind and the fireworks were canceled. I’ve spent most of my July 14 at the ocean with my family and the weather is always rainy because the 14 coincided with high tide ‘coefficients’ which always mess up the weather. So as tradition wants: we huddled inside all day, venturing for walks on the beach between downpours to dig for clams and search for crabs in areas usually under water. It was perfect!
