Sloane Tanen’s Sister Chicks

by margaretroach on March 5, 2009

WHEN ARTIST SLOANE TANEN’S jpg-stuffed email arrived in TSP’s inbox late last year, bringing new meaning to the concept of pecking order, we shared some of her crazy creations right away…to introduce her to the rest of the sister flock. Now we’ve rounded up more of Sloane’s special sister art into a slideshow, including several you haven’t seen before.

Despite a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence and two graduate degrees (one in literary theory from NYU, another in art history from Columbia), Sloane makes her living not in academia but as a painter and writer, and tending a henhouse of fuzzy golden chenille chicks. She has published numerous books starring these madcap characters, who come to life in her insanely intricate dioramas that are then photographed by collaborator Stefan Hagen.

“It’s amazing how much emotion can be projected onto a pile of chenille, two beads and some pipe cleaner,” says Sloane, whose husband, the prominent science journalist and author Gary Taubes, has been the closest of brother-friends to TSP’s Marion Roach Smith for more than 30 years.

Sloane, a sister herself, is not chicken (sorry) about tackling the sometime-tricky subject of sisterhood, as you’ll see in her varied takes on the topic in the show below. It takes a tough artist to make a tender portrayal of topics like the one up top…and we think Sloane’s it. Get better acquainted on her own website, or browse her prints at ImageKind.

These chicks are really great. Thanks for the laugh

I found them especially fun to following Marion’s article about shared histories, or should i say “her- stories”, vs my -stories

Thanks for the article- it gives clarity to family tales!
