IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER THAN the combination of ball gowns and bluegrass instruments? I think not. At TSP, we can’t get enough of The Carter Sisters, and of sister music in general. Here are some of our favorites, including a birthday nod to Emmylou Harris, who turns 62 today.

You may remember that we rang in 2009 on TSP with the Carter Sisters singing Keep on the Sunny Side; more Carter serenades, alongside other country-music sister acts, can be found in our country-music roundup in TSP’s Sisterpedia. From the alt-country sounds of The Watson Twins to the twanging tunes of Mother Maybelle and her sister-in-law, Sara, we’ve compiled a full directory of musical sister acts.

Hungry for more?  Have a peep at my weekly feature on sister songs and sister singers: I call it sister jams. Some of my favorites have been Swedish singer Jens Lekman, wild expat sisters CocoRosie, and family band The Staples Singers. Have suggestions for future features? Share them with us by email at thesisterproject [at] gmail [dot] com.

So happy birthday Emmylou, you’re in good company with TSP’s favorite country music gals.  Here’s a birthday song, to the tune of Red Dirt Girl.
