WHEN NEWS OF A COLLECTION OF 18 VINTAGE PHOTOS OF TWINS Maurine and Noreene reached The Sister Project one year ago today, we and our readers experienced a grand collective “Oh!” and worked to find out who these wonderful women were. The mystery got solved…but now, another chapter reveals itself, from a new commenter, Gary, who it turns out worked for 25 years in the camera shop where those photos got processed. Oh, my. "Chelsy & Melissa," by Baum
REDHEADS NOTE ONE ANOTHER on the street. We check each other’s freckle distribution and eye color. We are always on the lookout for another of our breed. Maybe it’s because we’ve heard so many sentences that begin, “Typical redhead, you’re so….” Artists have always noticed us, too, and one we adore is photographer Julia Baum, who, for nearly two years, has been working on a portrait series called “A Rare Breed,” consisting entirely of natural redheads (like herself). Our TSP Galleries show of Baum’s work is here.

LAST WEEK, TSP READER Margee Cooper sent us a 1964 photo (above) shot with her sister, Linda. And as you know, every picture tells a story. Margee’s is a humdinger, and to encourage you to share yours, we’ve included it here with a little slideshow of other new friends’ captioned images of sisterhood. [click to continue…]

TWIN SISTERS MARGARET AND CHRISTINE WERTHEIM have tapped into the powerful place where higher mathematics and women’s handicraft converge. It all started with the idea of crocheting a coral reef. Mindblowing. Have a look (image from the Institute for Figuring).

See a slideshow of Katherine’s work alongside her own words on women, sisterhoods and artistic inspiration.

DEAR ABBY HAD SISTER ISSUES, Marion tells us. The famous advice columnist had a twin who grew up to be Ann Landers, and rather than sibling harmony, there were many years that the two did not speak. More important to Marion: They had two separate meatloaf recipes, one per twin sister.

WHEN NEWS OF ROZ LEIBOWITZ’S recently acquired collection of 18 vintage photos of twins Maurine and Noreene went up on TSP last week, we experienced a grand collective “Oh!” That quickly expanded into an “Oh, my goodness,” as one photo after the other built upon the sisters’ story. But it was a story we were making up, each of us, in response to what we saw. What was the real story? We all began to wonder. [click to continue…]

S ISTERS AGE DIFFERENTLY. Or so maintains a new study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who might know a thing or two about this topic, since they recently studied the faces of 186 pairs of identical twins and reached some fairly astonishing conclusions. [click to continue…]

WHEN WE SAW ROZ LEIBOWITZ’S set of vintage photos of twins Maurine and Noreene this week on Flickr, we had to know more: Who were these red-headed sisters, and how had they come to live with Roz, a New York City-based artist and writer who uses found paper and imagery in her personal work? THE TOPIC OF TRANSPLANTS between twins, this one resulting in a baby, is complex and compelling, yes, but Marion Roach Smith finds herself wondering about how the sisters grappled with it all behind the scenes.
