YOU PROBABLY KNOW by now that here at The Sister Project, we can’t resist a good sister story, and we love the sisters known as nuns, but this particular piece of news took us by surprise. Bill Murray is one of our favorite actors and comedians (seen his hilarious turn as himself in last year’s Zombieland?) but we didn’t know that one of his eight siblings is a Catholic nun, and a dramatic one at that. Our Sister Paige has the story.

OUR SISTER ANASTASIA COULD STARE at Shannon Taggart’s series of nun photographs for hours. What do you think? Read Anastasia’s own wannabe nun story and visit her slideshow of vintage nun images.

http://www.vimeo.com/4789307UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO, I’d never heard of Gertrude Berg, and I suspect I’ve got company in my ignorance. Aviva Kempner’s new documentary, Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, aims to restore Gertrude Berg to her rightful fame; after all, Berg created and starred in the first character-driven situation comedy on American television, The Goldbergs. THIS VIDEO FROM THE LEGENDARY gospel singer and whoa!-way-ahead-of-her-time guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, says our own Sister Paige, would brighten the darkest day, and lift any heart. “Just look at her fabulous coat and fancy pumps, and then, good heavens, check out the moves on her. This sister sure knew how to shred.” Thanks, Paige, for happening upon this one to share with the rest of us.

AN IRANIAN GIRL’S GRIEF at the loss of a unique sisterhood is breathtaking, says Sister Paige. Read why ‘Persepolis’ is a must-rent, particularly this week, in light of the news from there that put the film back in TSP’s front of mind.

SISTER ANASTASIA IS AT IT AGAIN: She keeps digging up all kinds of nun memorabilia. This photo, a recent addition to her ‘Sisterhood in a Habit’ slideshow (where you’ll find the team’s official photo as well), is from a 1931 all-Sisters baseball team. Hey sister batter batter!
WE AT THE SISTER PROJECT have a thing for ladies auxiliary cookbooks–collections of best recipes gathered, bound and sold to support causes from churches to the Junior League. If cooking is a sisterhood, these lovingly compiled volumes deserve to be remembered and retried, or at least smiled about: How about a thrifty tuna bake, sisters (as in tuna casserole, anyone)? Let’s get cooking.
W E LOVE LADIES AUXILIARY COOKBOOKS, those crudely bound ones from sisterhoods of hospital volunteers and church groups and towns we’ve never been to. The older the better. Sister Paige kicks off a series of looks at such treasures by introducing us to the Sisters of Pythia (Indiana, circa 1929). The delicious story.
WHEN YOU WANT TO CELEBRATE an occasion on The Sister Project, as we do our 3-month blogaversary this week, what better cake than one from one of the last Shaker sisters? Get the recipe now.
ANASTASIA CONFESSES: She once wanted to be a nun, and has marked various moments of magic with these special sisters over the years. Enjoy her story and photo gallery.
SISTER DIANE GILLELAND of The Church of Craft preaches joy in the making and the power of the handmade article–especially if it’s created in the presence of others. Amen. Learn more about Diane.
WILL BILL’S BIG LOVE GET EVEN BIGGER? Will the Henricksons take a fourth sister-wife, in Ana the waitress? Or will the family’s equation be more about subtraction, with Barb perhaps lost to a recurrence of cancer or Nicki to increasing pressure from her father’s legal trouble? There were no clear answers last night as Big Love Season 3 premiered. Anybody doing the math along with us?

NO WONDER SISTER AGNES has her feathers all ruffled: The sisters-to-be seem to have broken a few commandments (we are afraid to ask what was recorded by that camera, oh my). Thanks to our sister Sloane Tanen for another of her weekly takes on trouble in the henhouse. (If you missed any previous installments, start here and work backwards.)
