So Mane-ly Sisterhood

HAIR. OH, HAIR. MAYBE IT was the Steel Magnolias post I did a few weeks ago that brought this age-old sisterhood subject back to mind. Here’s a fresh take.

Two Centuries of Sense

I AM LUCKY ENOUGH to have become good friends here at graduate school with a bonified Jane Austen nerd. (Hello, former English majors!) When I am a mess over school or weepy about love sagas, this friend of mine always listens to my gripes and then pauses thoughtfully, before saying something to the effect of: “It sounds like you need some more Jane in your life.” (Yes, this is her proposed remedy for everything.) Read on.

Notes from a Brother

by Anastasia on February 24, 2011

SISTER ANASTASIA’S recently jumped a big hurdle: she completed her graduate thesis reading! While her big brother couldn’t be there in person (he was busy sunning himself in Costa Rica), he did send something in his place.

Consumption on the Mind

by Anastasia on February 22, 2011

AS SISTER ANASTASIA WINDS DOWN her last semester of graduate school, she’s been thinking a lot lately about money. Of course, how to save it. But also, and more importantly, how she’s going to spend it (once she gets it, that is). Luckily she’s found some unexpected guidance in the book Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy Today? by Kate Bingaman-Burt, which contains illustrations of everthing Bingaman-Burt bought over a three year period. Read on…

Eating Like It’s 1912

by Anastasia on February 3, 2011

VINTAGE RECIPES HAVE long been a fascination of ours on The Sister Project. (Remember our foray into potato salads past? Or the ladies auxiliary chronicles?) The recipe box, after all, is one of the ways women have stayed connected across generational boundaries. Now Sister Anastasia’s looking at old recipes once again, inspired by a recent cuilinary adventure from writer Wency Leung. Get the scoop.

Anastasia on Brotherhood

AS IT TURNS OUT, my brother T has been in the throes of paramount brotherly obligations lately. And no, I do not mean he has been on the phone coaching me through my teaching dilemmas with sage big brother advice. What he’s been up to.

ITHOUGHT I’D share a photo that sums up how I’ve been spending the bulk of my free time lately. That’s right: I’ve been canning.

How’s That Reading List, Sis?

by margaret on August 25, 2010

FROM TIME TO TIME I love posting on here about sister-themed books (um, no I’m not talking about Sweet Valley High) that I’ve come across and enjoyed, because it always starts a juicy dialogue about what everyone has been reading lately. My current recommendation?

"Rather than come to blows with his sister over the missing Lego tree, he sat beneath his prayer flags and let the feelings wash over him." (Photo: Dave Lauridsen; Dwell)

THE HILARIOUS PHOTO BLOG Unhappy Hipsters posts photos from trendy design magazines along with little satirical captions. Why I especially love its captions about siblings.

The Strawberry Days

by margaret on June 18, 2010

By Anastasia Smith
STRAWBERRY SEASON MIGHT be waning south of the Mason-Dixon, but since I know it’s still going strong up north, I thought I’d share my new favorite strawberry-centric recipe that I’ve been perfecting during the recent months. (And I say “perfecting” because I’ve made it and then ate all of it more times than I would like to admit.) Best with strawberries picked with a friend, of course. The juicy details.

If I Were the Stork: Jamie Kelles

Jamie sports Style Council's recommended cutoff sweatshirt look.

LATELY I’VE BEEN LOVING The Seventeen Magazine Project, a social experiment and blog from 18-year-old high school senior, Jamie Kelles. The project guidelines require that Jamie live strictly according to the gospel of Seventeen Magazine for 30 days (from May 21 to the day of her high school graduation, June 21), in order to investigate further “the role of beauty/fashion magazines in society.” Her findings? Well, nearly to the end of this mad sociologist experiment, Jamie has blogged witty insight on all kinds of teen fem issues. Here are some of the highlights.

OY, I’VE GOT IT bad. As I round the quarter-century bend in my life, some primordial alarm clock within me is screaming. (Anyone else?) Here are the details of my current “issue.”
