A Bewitching Sister’s Birthday

bewitchedOUR FAVORITE WITCH, Elizabeth Montgomery, was born on this day in 1933. One of the reasons I stayed glued to my television for eight happy years was Elizabeth, who Bewitched us in her portrayal of Samantha Stephens.

But did you know that in 1975 she turned her nose-twitching lovely-witch role on its head by portraying the lead in a TV movie about Lizzie Borden? Also well-known for being outspoken in her political views, including her opposition to the Vietnam War, as well as her avid support of gay rights, Elizabeth did so in direct opposition to her father, Robert Montgomery, actor and conservative Republican, who was a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

A complex woman, our Elizabeth, sadly she died in 1981, though she lives on in a cult-like following that Bewitched still has, perhaps because, like its star, it took on social issues such as racism and divorce (Endora and her husband were estranged, remember?). That, and because not-so-deep-down we all really like witches.

great post, Marion! I didn’t know about the many facets of Samantha Stevens’ life. Of course I adore ‘Bewitched’ along with all the Salem women in my family. Endora and Aunt Clara were always my favorites.

Nostalgic heart warming post! I actually considered naming my 23 year old sisterless seeking daughter, Endora. My fabulous mom, Edna Salem, was such a fan of Endora that we often called her that. I was usually so amused by Endora’s mischievous spells that I felt little compassion for Derwood.

Oh, you women, both of you “Bewitched” fans. I love that, as well as how they really did explore gnarly topics on that show, using humor to nudge us into exploring how we really felt as well as what we might like to do to move ourselves toward better acceptance of things. Samantha and Endora were magnificent, weren’t they? Thanks so much, sisters. Let’s all take our brooms for a spin this afternoon in honor of them.
